Dešiniojo sparno atstovas siekia nušalinti McCarthy dėl skolos lubų susitarimo

Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.) threatened a long-shot move to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from his leadership post on Tuesday—becoming the first conservative lawmaker to raise the prospect of a “motion to vacate” amid conservative backlash over McCarthy’s deal with the White House to raise the federal debt ceiling.

svarbiausi faktai

Bishop, a member of the right-wing House Freedom Caucus who is among the coalition of conservative lawmakers that repeatedly voted against McCarthy during his speaker election in January, told Politinis “it has to be done” when asked if he is considering jumpstarting the process to eject McCarthy.

Bishop is among a group of at least 20 Republicans who have said they will vote against the debt ceiling legislation unveiled Sunday because it does not go far enough in addressing their demands for cuts to the federal budget and President Joe Biden’s policies.

“This is a career-defining vote for every Republican,” Bishop said during a House Freedom Caucus press conference on Tuesday while accusing McCarthy of negotiating the deal without the input of GOP members and describing the bill as “chock-full of cosmetic things, artificial things, things that have been outright lied about, misstated.”

While a quest to remove McCarthy is unlikely to net the support from the majority of the GOP conference it needs to succeed, some members have not ruled out supporting it, including Reps. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), who suggested in a House Freedom conference call on Monday the motion could be used to force McCarthy to agree to amendments to modify the legislation, Politinis pranešta.

But other conservative hard-liners who have expressed plans to vote against the debt ceiling bill have dismissed an effort to eject McCarthy, including Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), who told Politinis it would be “unfair” to bring the motion to vacate.

Bishop claimed the legislation—which would suspend the federal debt ceiling until January 2025—does nothing to reduce the federal deficit. “This bill, if it passes, must pass with less than half of the Republican conference,” Bishop said.

Stebinantis faktas

In a deal with conservative holdouts who successfully blocked his path to the speakership during the first 14 rounds of voting in January, McCarthy agreed to make the process for ejecting the speaker easier in exchange for their votes. Under the rules he conceded to, one member can kickstart the process, which requires a majority vote in the House to pass. When Democrats controlled the chamber, it required support from the party leader or majority of the party in power.

Pagrindinės aplinkybės

McCarthy and Biden announced Sunday they had reached a deal to stave off a federal default ahead of a June 5 deadline set by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen for when the U.S. could run out of cash and fail to meet its financial obligations. The legislation includes a cap on federal spending in fiscal year 2024 in line with the existing budget and a 1% increase in the following year. The bill also rolls back some unspent Covid-19 funding, rescinds new funding for the Internal Revenue Service, lifts a freeze on federal student loan repayments starting in August and raises the age people who receive food stamps are required to continue working. Both Democratic and Republican leaders on Capitol Hill are claiming the legislation is a win for their respective parties, though some conservatives have said the bill does not go far enough, while progressives have expressed concerns that it includes any concessions at all. Biden said previously he would not agree to any debt ceiling legislation that tacks on other provisions, but was forced to the negotiating table amid a tightening deadline.
